Ketamine for Mental Health Treatment

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine, initially developed as an anesthetic, has emerged as a groundbreaking treatment for various mental health conditions. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which may take weeks to show effects, ketamine has shown rapid benefits for patients struggling with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mood disorders.

How Does Ketamine Work?

Ketamine works by targeting the brain's glutamate system, which plays a crucial role in mood regulation and neuroplasticity. By enhancing synaptic connections and promoting the growth of new neural pathways, ketamine offers a unique approach to treating mental health disorders. This mechanism is particularly effective for individuals who have not responded to other forms of therapy or medication.

Conditions Treated with Ketamine

Ketamine has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health conditions, including:

  • Treatment-Resistant Depression: For patients who have not found relief with traditional antidepressants, ketamine offers hope with its rapid-acting effects.

  • Anxiety Disorders: Ketamine has shown promise in reducing symptoms of generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic disorders.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Ketamine can help alleviate the intense and often debilitating symptoms associated with PTSD, providing relief where other treatments may have failed.

  • Bipolar Disorder: Ketamine is being explored as a treatment for the depressive phases of bipolar disorder, offering a potential new option for mood stabilization.

What to Expect During Treatment

Once you receive your sublingual lozenges (to be taken orally) from Journey Clinical, we schedule a preparation session to discuss your intention and prepare you for the KAP dosing session. A dosing session is a 2–3-hour appointment where you meet with one of our therapists- either in person or remotely—and self-administer sublingual ketamine lozenges.

After taking the medicine, you lie down in a calm, comfortable space to experience an inward journey, while the primary effects last about 45 minutes. Your therapist remains present throughout to offer support and hold space.

The Benefits of Ketamine Therapy

  • Rapid Relief: Unlike traditional treatments that can take weeks to work, ketamine often provides relief within hours or days.

  • Non-Addictive: Ketamine, when administered in a controlled environment, has a low risk of addiction, making it a safer option for long-term treatment.

  • Versatile: Ketamine is effective for a range of mental health conditions, making it a versatile option for those who have not found success with other treatments.

  • Minimal Side Effects: While some patients may experience mild side effects such as dizziness or nausea, these are typically short-lived and manageable.
